I ran in the Citizen's Helping Citizen's 5K this morning. I was going to take it as an easy run since I have my high school class reunion tonight, but the competition got the better of me. It was a cooler morning, maybe about 62 degrees. There wasn't much sun. A few of my classmates were running it too. There was also a bride and groom (from my Running Club) who are getting married at 3pm today. She wore a veil and a Bride shirt. He had a Groom shirt. They ran it together and held hands across the finish. It was so cute!

The course wasn't too bad. There were hills but hey, it's Western PA...I am getting used to them. I enjoyed it a lot. It went through campus and to a park, where we did one lap around a 1/2 dirt track and then up a steep hill. After that, it wound down through a park and back into campus. I had a pretty fast start, doing my first mile in a little under 7 minutes. Not sure about my other split because the course was mis-marked. I had 2.2 on my GPS when I hit the 2 mile mark on the course.

So, my (previous) PR was 24:44 and last week, I missed it by THREE FLIPPIN' SECONDS. This week, I beat it by THREE WONDERFUL SECONDS! My time was 24:41!!!! I am thrilled:) I placed second in my age group (30-39), which was a marble desk set with pen.

It was a HOT day here. The race was set for 6pm so I was figuring it would be a little cooler by the start, but that wasn't the case. It was 85 and humid as can be. The race organizers were expecting around 100 people, but the final number ended up being around 170. It is part of the Triple Crown Series for my running club, so even though it is a small race, it is very competitive. All the elite runners from the club are there. I really wanted to prove myself as a serious competitor so I decided this would be a PR race for me.

I had run the course last week during my LSD, so I knew what to expect. It was fairly level with 2 longish hills. Neither one was very steep - just long. It seemed like a good course for a PR.

We started out right at 6pm. My first mile was 7:44. I was feeling good. The second mile was the one with the hills, but my second mile split was 15:30, so 7:14 for that mile. What?!?! A negative split?!?!? The last mile was a little rough. There was a kid (maybe 12-13 years old) who knew nothing about race etiquette and he kept sprinting ahead of me and cutting me off. I had to slow down to avoid tripping over him. I was so mad!

I came in with a time of 24:46 and my PR was 24:44. I totally would have done it if it hadn't been for that kid. I ended up placing third in my age and got a medal. I literally cried as soon as I crossed the finish line though because I was *that* close to my PR.

All in all, it was a well organized and fun race. Thanks to the Indiana Roadrunners for organizing it:)

I ran in the Latrobe Firecracker 5 miler. This was my first 5 mile race. I decided to treat it pretty much like I did with my last 10K since the distance was somewhat similar. I started off pretty quick but I got a little bogged down with the crowd (close to 400 people). I did my first mile in 7:46. After that, we hit a steady uphill through some neighborhoods. I refused to walk for even one step even though my legs were BURNING! There was a nice downhill at the 3.75 mile mark and even though, it was only about a quarter mile long, I gained some time there. During my last mile, the BLACK storms clouds appeared and I could hear thunder in the distance. I booked it to the finish for a time of 42:09 (8:25 pace).

I am happy with my time because I really thought I'd be closer to 45:00. My aunt finished a little less than a minute after me with a time of 43:03. For some reason, my GPS had the course at 5.06 miles and her GPS said 4.99 miles. Maybe I took my turns too wide?

I looked at the Run high results and I was 5th in my age out of 36 ladies. If the age brackets had been the usual 30-34 instead of 31-40, I would have left with some bling...Better luck next time!

I ran in the Dormont Dash 5K this morning. Here is an article about this race:

      http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/news/pittsburgh/s_630748.html

It was one of the toughest courses I have encountered so far. It was hills, hills, and more hills. My friend, Bernadette, ran it too and after the race, we shared the same thought - Every time we turn, it's another hill!

I have been doing some hill training, so I was able to keep a steady pace on most of the hills. One of them; however, was so tough that I started to walk a little bit. Just then, someone tapped me on the shoulder as they passed and encouraged me to keep going. I really needed that and ended up picking up the pace in the last mile.

My time was 25:26 which was fourth in my age division. Sadly, that means no medal today, but I am still happy with my performance and hope that Dormont continues to host this race for years to come.

    • Description:

This was my first 10K, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Of course, I obsessed over what time I should shoot for and what playlist I should use. I also looked up the weather no less than 10 times over the past week. It was 68 degrees at race time, with just a little bit of sun. Looked like a perfect day for a 5K - I just had to double that - No problem, right? LOL...

The race was pretty disorganized. I could barely hear the announcements and no one seemed sure of where the starting line was. Luckily, I found the right spot for the start of the race and was in the first half of the crowd at the gun start. My friend, Bernadette, started right near me, but I had already warned her that I wasn't going to be able to pace myself with anyone but myself. I had to be "in the zone".

I started off with a little bit of a faster pace than I had originally planned, but I had so much adrenaline pumping that I couldn't help it. At the one mile mark, there was a guy with a timer who said "4:55" as I passed. I knew that couldn't be right. I looked down at my GPS and it said 7:55. I heard a few people yelling out, 'You are three minutes off, dude". Pretty funny.

The first 2 miles were flat. I saw the 5K turnaround and actually thought to myself that it seemed too early to turn around. Looking back, that is surprising because I am so used to the 5K. At the 2 mile mark, there was a steady uphill climb and then a turn onto a bridge. After that, we made our way through an office complex and onto a sand and gravel trail. That was challenging.

There was SO MANY water stations. I took a swig at three of them and then poured the rest on my head. The sun came out at about mile 4.5 which felt a lot worse than it was. The cold water definitely helped.

When I saw the 5 mile marker, I decided to sprint. It was a little difficult because that was around the same area that the walkers and 5K runners were coming in to their finish. I did a lot of dodging and a few puddle leaps (from the crazy rain we had the other night), but I managed to make it in.

My time was 53:51. I feel really good about it, since I was trying to get under an hour and my "pie in the sky" goal was 55 minutes.  There was 38 finishers in my age division and I was #11.

I ran in the Daily American 5K in Somerset, PA on Saturday morning. It was a GREAT morning - I couldn't believe how many people came out for this event. The race started and ended with a lap around the track and the spectators were really enthusiastic. The course was mostly flat for the first mile and had two large hills, at about 1.3 miles and 2.4 miles. I knew this wasn't going to be a PR course. We were leaving for vacation directly after the race too, so I didn't want to push it too hard.

Emily and Caleb wore their "My Mommy is faster then your Mommy" shirts:

It was nice to have my biggest fans there:

I finished with a time of 25:45, which was third place in my age. I was only 15 seconds behind second place for my age, so I was wishing I had pushed just a little harder.

    • Description:

I did some research on FRANK (the "woman" who got first place in my age division at the Greenfield Glide) and HE is definitely a 33 year old man. So, of course, I called for a correction and I got this email in my inbox this morning:

      ****************************************************************************************

      Hi Maria,

Thank you for bringing this error to our attention. The preregistration file that was sent to us had Frank as a female and we did not catch the mistake. I forward your email to Bill Smith the race director and explained the problem. We will also repost the results on our website to show that you got first in your age group.

Congratulations on a nice run from us here at Miles of Smiles Timing Service.

Thanks again for letting us know about the error. We try to keep very accurate results.

Do you like HILLS, HILLS, and MORE HILLS???

If so, I have got the race for you! This morning, I participated in the Greenfield Glide 5K through Schenley Park in Pittsburgh. It was about 75 degrees at race time (8:30am) and sunny. It was a larger turnout than I was expecting, and the crowd was pumped and excited. I met a lot of fun people while we were waiting for the gun start and even had 2 people tell me that I didn't look old enough to have kids (WOO HOO!) The first 1.3 miles were mostly downhill, but the rest was all uphill! The beginning and end of the course were on a paved road, and the remainder of the course was on a dirt/gravel trail. It was pretty challenging. Because of the hills and the heat, there were 2 water stations.

      Photobucket

I did the first mile in a little under 7 minutes because I knew that the uphill battle on the way back was going to be tough. I crossed the 2 mile mark at 16 minutes, exactly. The last hill was terrible and I really struggled just to keep moving. There was some guy right behind me that was making this really annoying sound (I think you can hear it in the video) and I literally ran faster just to try to get away from him.

      Finish video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHRrxonmTuA

I think my official time was 26:07, which isn't great for me, but considering the hills, I am pretty happy with it.

      Photobucket

Now, to the controversy. According to the times by Run High, I placed second in my age division. But...first place was won by someone named FRANK! He/she wasn't present during the awards, so I am not sure what is going to happen. I do plan to email the race director to see if I truly placed first in my age. First place in the age gets a gift certificate to a local restaurant in addition to the medal, so if I won it, I would like to have that, know what I mean?

Sorry, this was a long one...Hope you made it this far!

I ran in the JR Taylor Memorial Bridge 5K on Sunday. It was a little chilly when we first got there but the sun came out right before it started. The course was relatively flat, which actually drives me crazy. I just get so bored with it when there are no hills. My GPS died on me right at the beginning so I ran this one "blind". They had someone at the mile markers reading off the times but I had my music on. At the mile marker, I heard the lady say "...34" and I wasn't sure if it was 8:34 or 7:34. That was tough for me - not knowing how I was doing.

I was pleasantly surprised when I got toward the finish and saw the clock just turning to 25:00. I sprinted in for a time of 25:07. I ended up placing second in my age, but no hardware yet because the awards had been shipped to him and only one of the 2 boxes had arrived. I was kind of upset about that because I love to wear my medal all day on race day. It will be sent to me soon though, so I guess it's okay.

    • Description:

I ran in the John Yelenic Memorial Day 5K in Blairsville. My aunt and uncle were doing it too, and it's been awhile since I ran a race with them. I was anxious to show them that my times have improved.

The race started at 8am. It was about 70 degrees, with just a touch of humidity. PERFECT race weather, in my opinion. I started in the middle of the pack, which I was kicking myself for later because I got stuck behind a guy with someone on both sides and I really wanted to be going faster. I ended up dropping back and circling around to pass them.

I started off at a pretty good pace and ran all the hills (Western PA is INSANE for hills, so I am getting used to them). I kept thinking that my aunt was probably RIGHT behind me and I really wanted to beat her, so that kept me going.

It was pretty much a giant circle through the town, with the finish line being about .2 miles beyond the start. There was one water station, but I just took a sip and kept going. There was one girl there that I see at a lot of races and I know she is in my age division. She did end up passing me at mile 2 and I just could not catch up. Frustrating but I knew I was running the best race I could.

I ended up finishing with a time of 24:44! This is over 2 minutes faster than my old PR. I can't believe it! I placed third in my age division, which was just a certificate, but it still felt great to hear my name being called. Oh, and I did end up beating my aunt by about a minute.

    • From: Mommy_Maria
    • Description:

I ran in Pittsburgh's Race for the Cure 5K this morning to raise some money for the Susan G. Komen foundation.  I was really nervous for today because I had just run the half marathon a week ago and my run on Friday night had felt like I was running in sand - possibly a result of some overtraining on my part since most people don't just pick up and run a half without training properly for it

It was super chilly this morning but the event was so great and motivational that I wasn't really feeling the cold until about 10 minutes before the race began, when I was standing near the start, just waiting. I decided to give my fleece to Nick and run in my pink tank top and shorts - pink was the color of the day, as you all probably know.

I had no clue what the course would be like but I heard several people around me talking about the huge hills. Once I started running it, I realized that they weren't kidding. The very beginning of the course was uphill, followed by a slight downgrade. There was one section that snaked up a hill (I think it is nicknamed "the serpentine") that was so rough that I was sure I was going to have to walk. Luckily, the last half mile-ish was mostly a downgrade so I sprinted that.

My official time was 26:47 which is a personal record for me (by a few seconds). I was 44th in my age division of 30-39 so no medal today. *LOL*  All in all, it was a great day. I was a sobbing mess though - listening to people read the names of who they were walking/running for - such a beautiful event!!!

    • Description:

I completed the Pittsburgh Half Marathon today. What a rush! As some of you know, I didn't find out that I was eligible to register (darn wait list) until April 20th, which only gave me about 13 days to train for it. That is NOT enough time. But, I thought that I could probably walk 13.1 miles so I figured I would do the early start (at 6:30am) and do a walking and jogging combination to get me to the finish line.

Nick came with me to be my cheerleader and to potentially wheel me home if worst came to worst. We got downtown with about 25 minutes to spare. This provided lots of time for freaking out and jumping around, being excited. There is just something about being in a crowd of mostly positive people. The energy level gave me goosebumps. As you can see, it was still dark out when we got to the starting line. Notice that huge smile on my face - I COULD NOT wait to start!

      prerunhalfmarathon.jpg

Finally, after much anticipation, the whistle blew and we were off. The air was chilly and I was wearing only a pair of shorts and a tank top. I decided to go ahead and run a bit to warm up, figuring I would just start walking when I got tired. Well, guess what? I didn't end up walking more than a couple steps here and there, mostly just at the water stations.

I finished the half marathon with a time of 2:15:06, which absolutely THRILLED me. I was estimating that I would take over 3 hours to finish.

      afterhalfmarathon.jpg

My Aunt Aileen and Uncle Scott did the full marathon, so we decided to all pose with our medals at their hotel room:

      afterhalfiewithscottsileen.jpg

I am so proud of myself for doing this and I have decided that I want to train for a full marathon now. Who would have guessed, huh?

Week seven was not such a great week for me AT ALL! I made the entire weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) into "Free days", as far as food was concerned and it definitely showed on the scale. I am doing a Half Marathon this coming weekend so I am not going to be completely following the plan until after that race because my body is going to need the extra carbs just to last for 13.1 miles. (YIKES! Why did I sign up for this?!?!?)

      My Stats:

      Weight =====> 134.4 (gain of 1.8 lbs/lost 6.4 lbs overall)
      Waist ======> 26.5" (no change/ lost 4" overall)

      Workouts:

Monday = Treadmill intervals for 3.64 miles
Tuesday = Run on treadmill for 4.54 miles
Wednesday = AM Weights (Lower body)
Thursday = Run outside for 6.2 miles
      Friday = nothing
      Saturday = Walk 8 miles, Ran 5K race (26:58)
      Sunday = nothing

As you can see, I am concentrating a lot of energy on running right now. Back to the plan soon though.

This morning, I ran in the Saint Bernard's School 5K in my hometown of Indiana, PA. I had attended St. Bernard's from Kindergarten until Sixth grade, so I welcomed the opportunity to help them raise some money. Nick and I took the kids in the stroller and walked to the race, as my warmup. It ended up being a 4 mile walk, which we weren't expecting, but it was nice.

The trail was paved and fairly level. It graded slightly upwards on the first half and then coming back was a slight downwards grade. There were a few steeper climbs but nothing compared to some of the other 5K's I have done in the past (see Clarion River 5K!).

My official time was 26:58. My GPS actually said it was 26:53 and the giant clock said about 27:00. That was my best time yet, so I was definitely happy about it.

I was even more happy when it came time for the awards. Yours truly got second place in the age division of 25-34. It was great!

      WITH MY MEDAL:

For the record, Nick and I walked back to my parents house (4 MORE miles!) after the race. I got a lot of sun on my shoulders because of course, I put sunscreen on the kids and forgot about myself!

Next race is the Pittsburgh Half Marathon on May 3rd. I haven't been training for it, specifically. I just found out that my wait list came through on Monday, April 20th so in total, I had 11 days to train for it which isn't possible. I don't expect a good time but I'd like to finish and preferably not end up on a stretcher. Wish me luck:)

I did not have a great week.

WEIGHT - 135.8 (loss of .6 lbs and 5 lbs overall)
      BMI - 21.3
WAIST - 27.5" (no change and 3" overall)
HIPS - 36" (no change and .5" overall)
      THIGH - 17.5 (loss of .5" and 1" overall)

I think my downfall was food this week. I let myself "cheat" a little too often. Giving in to negative peer pressure has always been an issue for me. Also, I think I need to do more planning ahead on meals. There were a few times this week where I was stuck somewhere without my protein/carb combo that has been so successful so far.

Better luck to me for this next week...

I ran the Clarion River 5K today in Cook Forest. It was such a great day for a run - About 55 degrees at start time and no rain. Nick, the kids, my Mom, my brother, and my Grandma all came to cheer me on.

I told Nick I was going to try to get under 28 minutes - until I saw the course. There was a HUGE hill at mile 2. I then realized it was going to be a challenge for sure.

As I was running it, I kept thinking about how he was going to look at the giant clock at 28:00 and feel bad that I didn't make it in my goal time. So, I ran faster and pushed myself as hard as I could.

Here is the video of the end:

I ended up with a time of 27:50 and placed second in my age division.

I am really proud of myself:) Next scheduled race is a 5K on April 18th in North Park, Pittsburgh.
